Where research meets the rink and the boardroom

Matthias Holmstedt, PhD, is a researcher and consultant at Mälardalen University, and the founder of Wegwyser.

His research focuses on business development and targets to contribute with understanding about what facilitates and aggravates progress in business. He describes core mechanisms that impact firms’ business development over time, studying historical macro changes that affect firm internationalization — such as changed political, industrial and economic prerequisites — as well as micro changes in practices related to control, governance and evaluation and their impact on firm performance. He mainly teaches methods related to decision making, such as business analytics, investment evaluation, product calculation and other management accounting related methods. He has experience as financial manager, controller, logistician and is frequently engaged as a consultant for industry and public actors.

Alongside his academic career, Matthias competed for many years at the elite level in ice hockey. Born in Karlskoga and raised in Västerås IK’s youth system, he played in Sweden’s Elitserien (SHL) with Västerås IK, in HockeyAllsvenskan and Allsvenskan, and spent six seasons in Norway with Lillehammer and Comet Halden. He also represented Norway internationally, including at the World Championship.
